Rick Wright, CEO of Market of Choice and one of Oregon’s most recognized figures in the grocery industry, passed away from natural causes at his home in Eugene on Sunday, June 29, according to a press release issued by the company.

Wright is remembered for his visionary leadership and his role in transforming Market of Choice over the past 46 years. Working alongside his father, Richard “Dick” Wright Sr., he helped grow a small discount grocery chain into Oregon’s largest independent, family-owned grocer. Under his leadership, the company prioritized locally-sourced products, stocking more than 7,000 across its 12 stores statewide.

He helped redefine what a grocery store can be — not just a place to buy food, but a force for sustaining local economies, fostering innovation and nourishing the spirit of Oregon, the release said.

The company says Wright’s legacy also includes a deep commitment to philanthropy, with ongoing support for organizations such as Doernbecher Freestyle, Angel Hair Foundation, Food For Lane County, and Kidsports.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie; mother, Marsha; siblings Suzyn, Craig and Laurie; children Zach, Staci and Sydney; and grandchildren Mina and Finley. According to the press release, the family has asked for privacy at this time. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
