Gooseberries are tart berries that are similar in size and color to green seedless grapes. Some varieties turn yellow-orange when ripe. They must be cooked before eating. The small berries can be used in sweet-tart desserts or made into jellies, jams or sauces. Their flavor melds those of green grapes, kiwi and starfruit. They are also sometimes called ground cherries or physalis. Gooseberries are available from New Zealand from February to mid-March and from the Pacific Northwest in June.
