Top Store Checks of 2018 — No. 2

by Ashley Nickle, Dec 21, 2018

The sheer size of this Wegmans in Natick, Mass., was remarkable. In an era in which retailers are leaning toward smaller spaces for new stores, Wegmans boldly took on a space that used to be a JCPenney.

As you might expect, the produce department was vast. It had tons of fresh-cut options — marketed as “EZmeals” — and also did a great job highlighting its organic offerings and Asian vegetables.

Wegmans also included fresh-cut fruits and vegetables in a “Meals” section, where it highlighted zucchini noodles, crinkle-cut butternut squash and other vegetables alongside ready-to-cook proteins.

Another element that stood out to me was the use of signage — introducing items that might be unfamiliar, addressing seasonality, and delivering information on ripeness, storage optimization and serving size.
