Survey indicates shoppers still focused on convenience, health going into 2019

Consumers plan to eat healthier and save more time in the coming year, online grocer Peapod found in a recent survey.

Peapod polled 1,000 people last month, and more than half said they intended to cook more healthy meals, use more fresh ingredients, and consume fewer processed foods in 2019.

Seventy-seven percent of those surveyed indicated they would rather eat a homemade meal than go out for dinner, according to a news release.

Among those surveyed, 43% said they plan to cook more in 2019, and that number jumped to 59% among millennials.

Millennials were also the most likely to say they expected to try unfamiliar items, such as jackfruit and paleo and keto products, in the new year.

While interest in health remains high, so does the desire for convenience.

“Above all else, Americans are looking to keep meal preparations easy for 2019,” Peapod said in the release. “Nearly half of all adults surveyed (47%) plan to take advantage of at least one of the following options in 2019: click-and-collect grocery shopping (27%), home grocery delivery (26%) and/or meal kit delivery (20%).

“Men show slightly more interest than women (23% vs 18%) in using a meal kit in 2019, and millennials show the most interest, with twice as many respondents (60%) expressing intent to purchase as compared to boomers (31%),” Peapod said.

Peapod is owned by Ahold Delhaize, which also operates retail banners including Food Lion, Giant Martins, Giant Food, Hannaford and Stop & Shop.
