Stater Bros. president to retire; Albertsons veteran named as successor

Stater Bros. Markets president George Frahm plans to retire Oct. 31 after more than 47 years with the company.

Greg McNiff, whose most recent role was president of the Portland division of Albertsons, has been selected as Frahm’s successor, according to a news release.

McNiff’s grocery career has spanned 38 years, including 27 years in the Southern California market. In his new role, McNiff will report to CEO Pete Van Helden.

Frahm and McNiff plan to begin working together next month to ensure a smooth transition. McNiff will officially assume the role of president Nov. 1.

“I have had the privilege of knowing George for many years through our affiliation in various food industry organizations and events,” McNiff said in the release. “I have tremendous respect for George and his leadership style and realize I have some huge shoes to fill. I look forward to joining the Stater Bros. family and returning back to Southern California.”

Stater Bros. chairman Phil Smith expressed gratitude for Frahm’s contributions to the retailer over the years.

“He is known as a skilled executive who is praised for his integrity and exceptional leadership,” Smith said in the release. “Throughout the course of his entire career with Stater Bros., George has relentlessly championed to advance the best interests of our company and our people. The entire Stater Bros. family of employees and I wish him the very best in his retirement.

“We’re also excited for Greg to join us,” Smith said. “His proven food industry leadership and experience in our local marketplace make him a great fit for our company. I am confident that he will do an outstanding job as our president.”
