Raley’s CEO starts video series on food, health

Raley’s released the first episode of an eight-part series of videos from CEO Mike Teel, and added sugar is the first topic.

The new series is part of the effort by Raley’s to assist shoppers in making healthier choices.

“I believe that by being in the business of food, we are also in the business of health,” Teel said in a news release. “Our aisles are the point of decision-making that can have a huge impact on health, with customers making thousands of decisions about what they put into their bodies each day.

“The topics discussed in these videos come from the heart and my personal beliefs and experiences,” Teel said. “My hope is that they’ll inspire a real conversation in the food industry that inspires food producers and grocery stores to change for the better, together.”

In the first video, Teel notes that shoppers seeking products without added sugar can find them at Raley’s because they are marked with an “S” as part of the Raley’s Shelf Guide. When people shop online, they can sort the products they see using that attribute and others, including nutrient-dense, gluten-free and minimally processed.

Raley’s has more moves planned in the vein of making its stores healthier for shoppers. It is eliminating private-label soda offerings, eliminating the sale of tobacco in stores, and offering free fruit for kids in all stores, along with deploying its shelf guide.
