Meijer has expanded its Shop & Scan program to 23 stores in Chicago and northwest Indiana after testing the technology in Michigan.

Shop & Scan allows people to scan items as they add them to their cart, and then they can scan their phone at a self-checkout line to make their purchase, according to a news release.

Meijer piloted the program at 54 stores in Michigan last year. Since then, the store’s app has been downloaded more than 1.1 million times, and more than 80% of shoppers have used the app repeatedly and have continued to provide feedback, per the release.

Shop & Scan will roll out in more Meijer stores over the course of the year.

“We’re all challenged by time and busy schedules, so Shop & Scan allows customers the opportunity to truly be in control of their shopping trip, from the moment they walk in our stores to the minute they walk out,” Gerald Melville, regional vice president, said in the release. “Customers are really responding to the simplicity of scanning and bagging as they go. This allows them to save time and avoid lines, speeding up their checkout experience.”
