Lidl enters Georgia, confirms Alabama expansion

Lidl US has a $100 million regional headquarters in Cartersville, Ga., in the works, and plans for its reach are firming up.

The Arlington, Va.-based company, which opened its 30th store (and first in Georgia) in mid-September, confirmed to local officials that its first Alabama store will be in Decatur.

A local official called the chain’s ripple effect “tremendous” for the local economy.

The location, in north central Alabama, pits Lidl in direct competition to recent Aldi expansions in the state. There are currently 20 Aldi stores in Alabama, all in the northern half of the state.

A Lidl spokesperson did not give a timeline for the company’s expansion to Alabama. Most of the initial 30 stores opened this summer have been in North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina.
