INTERACTIVE: Kantar Consulting ranks grocery retailers by 2018 sales

Walmart, Kroger, Costco and Albertsons and rank among the top 10 retailers in the U.S. for 2018 sales, according to Kantar Consulting.

The leader by a vast margin is Walmart, which has racked up more than $385 billion this year.

Amazon, which owns Whole Foods Market but for which grocery still represents a small part of the business, followed at more than $125 billion.

Kroger came in third at nearly $123 billion.

Costco sales were listed at $101 billion — with 25% of sales outside the U.S. — with Albertsons bringing in $60.3 billion.

Beyond the top 10 in revenue were the following grocers:

  • Ahold Delhaize — $43.5 billion (41% outside the U.S.)
  • Publix — $36.8 billion
  • Aldi — $30.9 billion (71% outside the U.S.)
  • H-E-B — $23.4 billion
  • Meijer — $17.7 billion
  • Wakefern — $16.6 billion
  • Hy-Vee — $10.1 billion
  • Southeastern Grocers — $9.5 billion
  • Giant Eagle — $9.1 billion
  • Wegmans — $9.1 billion
  • WinCo Foods — $7.7 billion

Kantar Consulting also included 2023 forecast outlook ratings for each of the companies on the list.

Companies with a neutral outlook included Walmart, Amazon, Kroger, Costco and Publix.

Listed as trending up over the long term were Aldi, H-E-B and Hy-Vee.

Marked as expected to decline on the list in coming years were Albertsons, Ahold Delhaize, Meijer, Wakefern, Southeastern Grocers, Giant Eagle, Wegmans and WinCo Foods
