Fortune’s Best Workplaces list highlight organizations excelling in creating positive, inclusive and engaging environments, and four retail grocers have made the list for exceptional workplace culture and employee satisfaction.

Honored on the list are Wegmans Food Market Inc., Publix Super Markets, Sheetz Inc., Island Pacific Supermarket and Target Corporation.

Wegmans Food Market, Inc.

Great Place To Work and Fortune magazine have ranked Wegmans Food Markets Inc. No. 1 on the 2025 Fortune Best Workplaces in Retail list. This award is based on analysis companies in the retail industry.

This is the 10th consecutive year that Wegmans has ranked No. 1 on the list.

“We couldn’t be more proud to be named the No. 1 retailer to work for in America for 10 years in a row,” says Colleen Wegman, president and CEO of Wegmans Food Markets. “We understand this is the foundation of why people choose to shop with us, and we are deeply grateful to both our people and our customers for making Wegmans a trusted, happy and welcoming place.”

The Best Workplaces in Retail list is highly competitive, according to a news release. Great Place To Work, the global authority on workplace culture, determines its lists using its proprietary Trust Index Survey to evaluate and certify thousands of organizations in America’s largest ongoing annual workforce study, based on over 1.3 million survey responses and data from companies representing more than 8.4 million employees.

Survey responses reflect a comprehensive picture of the workplace experience. Honorees were selected based on their ability to offer positive outcomes for employees regardless of job role, race, gender, sexual orientation, work status or other demographic identifier.

“Congratulations to the Best Workplaces in Retail,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work. “In every industry, our research shows that investing in people drives productivity and higher revenues. When trust levels are high in an organization, people don’t fear AI — they embrace it.”

In 2024, Wegmans also ranked as a Best Workplace for Parents, Best Workplace for Women, Best Workplace for Millennials and was named to the People Companies That Care list.

Customers and employees will celebrate the honor on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. when mini cupcakes will be served at every Wegmans store. For customers who prefer a healthy option instead of mini cupcakes, clementine tangerines will be available.

Publix Super Markets

For the 12th consecutive year, Publix was named on the Best Workplaces in Retail list by Fortune, ranking third of the 20 best large retail workplaces for 2025. Associates reported the company’s welcoming and promote-from-within culture, premier customer service and dedication to community outreach are some of the reasons they enjoy working at Publix, according to a news release.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of the best workplaces in the retail industry for the 12th consecutive year,” says Maria Brous, Publix director of communications. “We’re especially proud of this designation because it’s from our associates who shared their experiences as part of the award process.”

According to the Great Place To Work survey, associates responded that they are made to feel welcome when joining the company.

As the largest employee-owned company in the country, Publix says it offers eligible associates the opportunity to become company owners through its employee stock ownership and employee stock purchase plans. Publix also helps eligible associates further their education with tuition reimbursement benefits and offers a variety of career paths and opportunities for advancement.

Publix says it is devoted to being a responsible citizen in its communities and a good steward of the environment. The company encourages its associates to serve their local communities by volunteering during its two Publix Serves Weeks each year — one focused on hunger and the other on sustainability. The company’s Good Together hunger campaign also takes place twice a year, when Publix comes together with its associates and customers to donate fresh produce and nonperishable food items to Feeding America partner food banks and other organizations. In addition, Publix donates food from its stores that is no longer salable but still safe for consumption through the Good Together food donation program.
