Giant Food Stores to acquire five Shop ‘n Save stores

Giant Food Stores has agreed to purchase five Shop ‘n Save stores from Supervalu.

Supervalu, now a subsidiary of United Natural Foods, has been working for some time to sell its various retail assets and devote its focus to wholesale.

The sale of the Shop ‘n Save stores is expected to close in the first quarter of 2019, and Giant plans to convert the locations to Martin’s Food Market stores, according to a news release.

The stores set to be switched over are in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

“This acquisition demonstrates our continued commitment to the long-term growth strategy we announced earlier this year,” president Nicholas Bertram said in the release. “Our Martin’s associates have proudly served many of these communities for years, and we look forward to expanding the Martin’s brand along the Interstate 81 corridor and within the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.”
