Sweet onions tend to be larger and generally round with flatter bottoms than standard onions. Sweet onions are milder and sweeter also and not sold year-round from storage as they can only be stored for a few months. Sweet onions from Walla Walla, Wash., have common characteristics as others and are usually sold from June to October.
