Taylor Farms recognized for sustainability, energy programs
Taylor Farms, Salinas, Calif., is celebrating sustainability milestones in energy independence and waste conservation, with three facilities cutting significant amounts of waste.
The three Monterey County facilities received the U.S. Green Building Council’s Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) platinum zero waste certification, which signifies the company diverted more than 95% of materials from the environment, incinerators and landfills.
At the same time, the company has attained 90% energy dependence from the utility grid, according to a newsletter.
Chairman and CEO Bruce Taylor said customers, consumers and business partners are increasingly aware of sustainable practices used in food production.
"We are proud that Taylor Farms is at the forefront of developing and identifying sustainability practices that are breaking down barriers and establishing new norms within the industry,” he said in the release. “Consumers should be confident that our product offerings are helping them to lead healthy lives while contributing to a healthy environment and healthy communities."
Taylor Farms has partnered with Concentric Power, Bloom Energy, REC Solar and Foundation Wind Power for “microgrid” energy solutions to boost renewable and alternative energy use.

Investment in an Environmental Management System (EMS) allowed the company to pledge zero-waste programs nationally, according to the release, with support from sustainability consultants including Measure to Improve. Taylor Farms has more than 10 initiatives across the country using solar, wind, fuel cells, cogeneration, zero waste, water recycling and other sustainability methods.
