SunnyGem expects growth in pomegranate arils

Buttonwillow, Calif.-based SunnyGem LLC is ready to begin its first full season offering 4.4-ounce resealable plastic cups of pomegranate arils, said Barry Kriebel, president and general manager.

The product, marketed by Flavor Tree Fruit Co. LLC, Hanford, Calif., was launched in late December last year.

“We are very excited to be able to offer this great product this season,” said Kaleb Smith, assistant sales manager for Flavor Tree.

SunnyGem is “pretty delighted” with sales of the product through Flavor Tree, Kriebel added.

They’re sold in the fresh-cut produce section and offer an alternative to the “very messy” process of separating arils from the fruit at home, he said.

The company installed sophisticated equipment from Israel that shreds the whole pomegranate and separates the arils, he said. They’re available from late October until March.

The company expects to expand its arils business in 2018, Kriebel said.

SunnyGem also packs an 8-ounce size of arils as well as fresh, whole pomegranates, which also are sold by Flavor Tree.

SunnyGem handles sales of its pomegranate juice concentrate, Kriebel said.
