Officers spoil the party for smugglers bearing ‘gifts’
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers “unwrapped” a case involving 100 packages of marijuana in load of vegetables in San Diego.
Smugglers attempted to conceal the marijuana by wrapping it in jalapeno-themed wrapping paper, and placing the packages in boxes of jalapenos and other vegetables, including green beans, according to a CBP news release.
The semi tractor-trailer was loaded with mixed produce, according to the cargo manifest, but officers found the marijuana, weighing 527 pounds and valued at $211,000 throughout the boxes in the trailer.
When the truck arrived at the port of entry on Oct. 25, an officer referred it to a secondary inspection. A canine in the dock area alerted officers to the trailer, and they found the marijuana.
