Minor Crop Farmer Alliance honors Humfeld, Korson
Korson was president of the cherry group since it was formed in 1988, and Humfeld joined the Cranberry Institute in 2010.
They retired at the end of 2019 and were honored at a Dec. 17 event, according to a news release.
“Active and engaged volunteers are the heart of MCFA. Phil and Terry have been reliable leaders who have always been willing to share the responsibilities of running the organization and helping to advance our goals in Washington, D.C.,” Jim Cranney, alliance chairman and president of the California Citrus Quality Council, said in the release. “They have made a tremendous difference to this organization and will be greatly missed.”
At the meeting, Cranney was joined by alliance technical committee co-chairman Mike Aerts of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association, and co-chairwoman Gabrielle Ludwig of the Almond Board of California, in presenting commemorative gifts to the retiring fruit group leaders.
Korson was active in the group for 25 years, and served three years as the group’s chairman.
The release said Humfeld was active in MCFA for nine years, including serving as vice-chairman.
“MCFA has been a key part of the specialty crop industry’s umbrella for a very long time, and one of the best organizations I have ever worked with,” Korson said in the release. “As we continue to face crop production challenges, this organization is one of our only voices working to bring science and reason back to the dialogue.”
In the release, Humfeld said the MCFA provides a tremendous return on investment for the specialty crops industry.
“This group has been one of the best investments our organization and our industry has ever made,” Humfeld said in the release.
Julie Gordon, who has worked at the Cherry Marketing Institute for about 20 years, succeeds Korson.
William “Bill” Frantz is the Cranberry Institute’s new executive director. He was with Ocean Spray Cranberries for almost 32 years, with his most recent role senior manager of ag economics and government affairs.
