Jewel-Osco creates excitement with Blueberry Harvest, Melon Mania

Billboards, banners, T-shirts and more helped spread the word in early August that Michigan blueberries were starring in a special event at Jewel-Osco stores.

The company’s recent Blueberry Harvest promotion highlighted berries from Traverse City, Mich.-based North Bay Produce in pints plus 2-pound and 5-pound containers. Departments throughout the store got involved, with displays tying in everything from blueberry pies to blueberry Truly Hard Seltzer to dried blueberries.

“The stores get really excited about these events,” said sales and merchandising manager Scott Bennett, who noted that one produce manager built a farm stand backdrop for the blueberry display at his store.

After the Blueberry Harvest event wrapped up, Jewel-Osco put on a Melon Mania event that featured Black Diamond seedless watermelons, Athena muskmelons, both seeded and seedless watermelons, and personal-size watermelons. The melons came from another regional producer, Vincennes, Indiana-based Mouzin Brothers Farms.

Bennett had visited both producers recently, and Jewel-Osco used photos from the visits on its Facebook page as another way to promote the local, seasonal fruits.

Across the country, more people are in grocery stores than usual due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on foodservice. That being the case, Bennett said he is working to offer more exciting events and promotions than ever to help people enjoy coming in to stores again.
