Hass board touts avocados’ nutrition benefits

The Irvine, Calif.-based Hass Avocado Board has been spreading the word about the nutrition benefits of hass avocados.

In January, the board kicked off the new year by sending out a news release and “bilingual assets” — including Heart-Check certified recipes in English and Spanish and the Consejo (advice) column — to Hispanic consumer media promoting avocados at breakfast, said Gina Widjaja, director of marketing and communications.

The promotion featured the latest study published in the journal Nutrients, which described heart health benefits for adults who consumed fresh avocado at breakfast, she said.

“Given heart disease is a leading cause of death among U.S. Hispanics, the findings offer timely inspiration for the millions of U.S. Hispanics working on a new year’s resolution to eat more heart-healthy in 2019,” she said.

The release also featured heart-healthy recipes such as Avocado and Banana Overnight Oats and Avocado Berry Breakfast Smoothie.

During National Nutrition month in March, HAB is promoting better snacking among Hispanic and general market consumers, she said.

A news release was in the works describing a survey about the influence of social media when it comes to snacking, as well as barriers for adopting and maintaining healthier snacking habits.

“We will also be working with our Avocado Goodness Experts who are media-registered dietitians in promoting the health benefits of avocados throughout the lifespan — from birth to 24 months all the way to older adults,” she said.

The Hass Avocado Board continues to increase target consumers’ consumption of fresh avocados by having health professionals recommend the fruit to patients or clients and promote the board’s Love One today resources, Widjaja said.

“Our advertisements promoting heart health and weight management were delivered through health professionals’ media outlets like Today’s Dietitian and Food & Nutrition magazines,” she said.
