Description
Stemilt Growers is a leading tree fruit growing, packing, and shipping company based in Wenatchee, Washington. Owned and operated by the Mathison family, Stemilt is the nation?s largest supplier of sweet cherries and organic tree fruits, as well as a key supplier of Washington-grown apples, pears and stone fruit. Stemilt?s company roots trace back to 1893 when the Mathison family homesteaded 160 acres on Stemilt Hill overlooking the Columbia River and the town of Wenatchee. In 1914, the Mathison?s planted their first apple, cherry and pear orchards atop the Hill, where high-elevation microclimates offered superior growing conditions for tree fruits. In 1947, Tom Mathison, took a leadership role in the family business following his father's tragic death. In 1961, Tom was the driving force behind the construction of the family's first packinghouse, which was built on Stemilt Hill. A true pioneer, Tom founded Stemilt Growers in 1964 with the goal of having better control over the quality of fruit in the marketplace. Today, Stemilt is still solely owned by the Mathison family. Tom?s children and grandchildren serve as the company?s principle officers. His grandson, West Mathison is Stemilt?s president. Stemilt owns four fruit-packing facilities in Washington and one in Stockton, California. Stemilt also owns an orchard management division called Stemilt AgServices. Based on the traditions that Tom began, Stemilt?s mission is ?to maximize long-term return to the land by building consumer demand.? Stemilt is committed to growing, packing, and delivering World Famous Fruit to consumers worldwide.
